PICK THREE - JIM JAMES OF MY MORNING JACKET
PICK THREE - JIM JAMES OF MY MORNING JACKET
Oh, Jim James, what to say about JJ…
My Morning Jacket returns to SXSW for the first time since 2002, etc etc, haven’t I written about this all before (ad nauseum, right)? They have a new record coming out in June called Evil Urges (am I allowed to say it’s totally killer and will blow you away with its supreme awesomeness?) Seriously, I don’t know how Jim does it. He seems like a normal person, but shoo… there’s some genius in those boys (which is why I married one. LP don’t marry no fools. Uh oh, I just referred to myself in the third person again).
To learn more about Mr. James, last fall he did The LP Questionnaire.
Anyhoo, once you read Jim’s contribution, I think you’ll agree he just might have a career in comedy if this whole “music” thing doesn’t work out.
You may enjoy his Pick Three. You may not expect to see any of these artists performing at SXSW.
Jimi Hendrix: Word on the street these days is that this young guitar player is on the move. I think he won the Mercury Prize last year for his Live from Hawaii set? His showcase Friday night at Buffalo Billiards is sure to please even the most die hard skeptics. If you miss that, you can catch his in-store at Urban Outfitters the following afternoon.
Led Zeppelin: Legendary underground Brit rockers are back and there has been a lot of excitement over the Led Zeppelin reunion, and I am stoked they chose SXSW for their comeback, since we’ll be there to see it!! Led Zeppelin IV is a good album to start with if you have not heard this group. This is sure to be one of the most packed industry showcases, so show up early and bring your badge!
Bob Dylan: When i heard Bob Dylan was going to be on one of the songwriting panels I was very excited. It will be fun to hear some of his secrets and maybe pick up a few songwriting tips from the king himself. I’m also excited about catching him Saturday afternoon for an in-store signing at Waterloo.
Once again, these acts will not be performing at SXSW, but I’m sure we all wish they were - especially Hendrix. Please come back later when Jacob Golden answers The LP Questionnaire. I promise no more MMJ ’til next Thursday when Patrick Hallahan weighs in with his Pick Three. You can keep up with all the Pick Three madness here. Email paint chips to musicblog@sxsw.com. I think I’m getting the plague, lp
