Synopsis:
Passionately filmed for two years with no budget, SAVIOURS is the moving debut feature film by Ross Whitaker and Liam Nolan. The film is an intimate, gripping documentary following three young boxers from the same Dublin boxing club, St. Saviours Olympic Boxing Academy. The club is a safe haven amongst the dangerous flats of Dublin's north inner city. There, under the guidance of the club's canny coaches, the three boxers fight for a better life both inside and outside the ring. Director's Bio:
Street Films was established in 2004 by Ross Whitaker and Liam Nolan, each of whom had made one half-hour documentary until that point. While many filmmakers look abroad, Ross and Liam decided that there are few places that are as interesting or as vibrant as Dublin, and set out to make documentaries in their home town. Street Films aims to make honest, truthful films and to tell their stories with the energy they deserve. Street Films' first documentary was God Blows My Mind (2005) an experimental observational piece about young American Evangelical Christians attempting to spread the Word of God on the streets of Dublin. The documentary received a very positive reaction at the Galway Film Fleadh, Stranger Then Fiction and other screenings and won the Sunday Ghetto Best Short Film 2006 Award. Their second film was Na Deoraithe (2006), commissioned by Filmbase/TG4 and Directed by Liam Nolan, a comparison between the life of an Irish Migrant Worker in England in the 1960s and Foreign Migrant Workers in Ireland in the present day. Their third film (and first feature-length film), Saviours, is an observational documentary about the rough-and-tumble lives of inner-city boxers in Dublin completed in July 2007. It has won awards at festivals in Ireland and will be released theatrically in Ireland in 2008. |
