Synopsis:
Directed by Cathal Black, The Undertaking explores the life and work of Irish American poet and undertaker Thomas Lynch. Beautiully filmed, the documentary traces the contrasts between Lynch's worlds Ð the living and the dead, Michigan and West Clare, literature and undertaking. It is moving, poignant and haunting with Lynch's evocative poetry and essays at its core. Director's Bio:
Born in Dublin, Cathal Black began his career with RTE where he worked as a studio cameraman until 1973, when he became an independent filmmaker. His first film, Wheels (1976), was an adaptation of a story by John McGahern, and was followed by Our Boys (1980), a powerful drama documentary which took a scathing look at the brutality of the Christian brothers and the life-long effects that this had on their pupils. Written by Dermot Healy, RTE refused to broadcast it for a full ten years. In 1984 he directed Pigs, a black comedy for television set in a Dublin squat, featured music by Irish composer Roger Doyle. In 1995, Korea, also based on a McGahern story, won the Jury Prize at the Amiens Film Festival and the Asta Nielsen Award at the Copenhagen Film Festival, and came runner-up for best film at the Seattle Film Festival. More recently he produced and directed Invisible World (1998), a documentary telling the story of an Irish spiritual healer, Tony Hogan and in 1999 he directed Love and Rage, a full-length feature film based on James Carney's book "The Playboy and the Yellow Lady" and starring Greta Scacchi and Daniel Craig.Cathal Black has also worked as a script advisor and film editor on many Irish films, including Clash Of The Ash (Directed by Fergus Tighe), Reefer and the Model (Directed by Joe Comerford), Hard Shoulder (Directed by Mark Kilroy), Hush a bye Baby (Directed by Margo Harkin) and Horse (Directed by Kevin Liddy). As well as running his own production company Forge Films, Cathal teaches film practice at Dun Laoghaire College of Art Design and Technology, and has recently been appointed to 'Aosdana', which honours artists engaged in literature, music and the visual arts who have made an outstanding contribution to the arts in Ireland. Some reviews of his work include:Our Boys: "Stylish, funny, sharp, poignant and very powerful. I do not think anyone who has seen it will easily forget it." - Sunday TribunePigs:"In this film Cathal Black has proved himself a master of the medium...I can honestly say that this is the best Irish film I have ever watched and one which still haunts the heart and memory of the viewer long after it has been seen." - Film InternationalKorea:"Delicate, assured and truly cinematic.""Not just a small masterpiece but also an emblem of what art as a whole can do.""Luscious cinematography, elegiac tone and powerful central performances. Korea will stand as a classic" - Irish Independent |
