NY Times Reviews New Books From Two SXSW Authors

Sarah LaceyTwo former SXSW Interactive speakers are featured in the July 27 issue of the New York Times Book Review. The first of these authors is Rob Walker, whose new book is titled “Buying In: The Secret Dialogue Between What We Buy and Who We Are”. According to the review by Farhad Manjoo, “Few observers have plumbed the subterranean poetry of marketing as thoroughly as Walker. Mining research from psychology and economics to explain the unlikely rise of several brands, [he] argues that our susceptibility to marketing arises from our ignorance of its pervasiveness.” Less flattering is Katie Hafner’s assessment of “Once You’re Lucky, Twice You’re Good: The Rebirth of Silicon Valley and the Rise of Web 2.0″, which is the new release by Sarah Lacey (pictured above). Hafner contends that the author “draws a fascinating portrait of Marc Andreesen and his need not just to best himself but to equal the success of his mentor Jim Clark, the Silicon Valley entrepreneur who financed netscape. Otherwise, the title seems to bear little relevance to the book.” Ouch.
