2008 Interactive Recap for Sunday, March 9
Friday · Saturday · Sunday · Monday · Tuesday
Despite the extensive schedule of parties the previous evening, most attendees rebounded well for Sunday panel programming. Highlights of the morning sessions included "The Female Takedown of Casual Gaming", which revealed that 38% of all gamers are women. Otherwise, science fiction was a definite Sunday morning theme, as explored in Make It So: Learning from SciFi Interfaces" and "Everything I Know About Accessibility I learned From Star Wars".
Certainly the most-talked about session on this day was the Mark Zuckerberg keynote interview, as conducted by Sarah Lacy of BusinessWeek. For better or for worse, this interview forcefully demonstrated how new technologies enable formerly disconnected crowds to effectively communicate with each other about their feelings -- in this case, their dislike of the content at hand.
Other afternoon programming included "Human and Property Rights in Virtual Worlds" as well as the wildly interactive "Gossip" panel. Also popular was "LOLWUT? Why Do I Keep Coming Back to This Website?", a session made all the more compelling when the speakers ordered dozens of Burger King cheeseburgers to feed hungry attendees.
Sunday was the first day of the iF! Trade Show & Exhibition, and foot traffic on this day was exceptionally heavy. In addition to more than 100 booths, the exhibit floor was also host to Studio SX and the South by BookStore. Also well-attended was the SXSW Day Stage, located next to the iF! Trade Show.
After daytime activities concluded at the Austin Convention Center, registrants headed to the Austin Hilton for the 11th Annual SXSW Web Awards. Presented by Adobe and emceed by Eugene Mirman, this ceremony proved that Abe Lincoln is more of a social networking wiz than your average dead president. Who knew?
