1001 Nights Orchestra is Austin’s longest running Middle Eastern music group. Founded by Kamran Hooshmand on oud, santour, guitar and vocals, it includes Ken Maranian on clarinet, Don Weeda on accordion, and Lauren Checchio & Anne Alexander on percussion. It has received a Best of Austin Award for their score to the 1924 silent, “Thief of Bagdad”. Their CD “Music from the Middle East & Beyond” topped the Austin Chronicle’s Top 10 list.
