Bellafea means Beautifulugly in Spanish. Sure, it’s a contradiction, but—for the young Chapel Hill trio that takes the name—it’s a fact of life, a perception that unites the binaries. Bellafea’s sound is one of dynamic clash and contrast so constant it’s the only norm. Heather McEntire’s voice can coo or curse. Her guitar can sway or slash. Drummer Nathan Buchanan can lock into a popping rhythm or crack it open from its seams. Bassist Eddie Sanchez can ooze into the gaps or flood them. But none of these characteristics are mutually exclusive: Bellafea’s roar can be beautiful, and its whimper can be ugly. Totally engrossing. - Grayson Currin
