Started in 1977, the Slits became one of the most influential all-women bands to emerge in London. The Slits embrace reggae and use dub rhythms behind confrontational lyrics. Mark P recalls seeing the Slits' first gig, when they opened for The Clash in March. "I've got to admit they scared the shit out of me...Ari Up danced around screaming the lyrics like a wailing banshee.. they were dangerous and their presence threatened those that considered rock to be a male-only pursuit. To me their existence was liberating: part of punk's attempt to push down barriers and change the rules." The pioneering Slits refuse to compromise their vision or sweeten their sound, and their U.S. tours encourage more young women to pick up guitars and plug in.
"When some girls would be playing Barbie, we would dress up like the Slits." -Kate Schellenbach of Luscious Jackson(words by Holly George-Warren) They are back with a vengence infecting us all once again with the sounds of THE SLITS!!!! |
