by Keith N. Dusenberry Itend to consider Ohio something like Michigan's slightly boring, speed trap-infested cousin. Yet, somehow they manage to turn out good bands. And those bands tend to have a good sense of humor, which as a music writer, I greatly appreciate. (Note to most bands: You take yourselves too seriously.) Guinea Worms are one of those solid Ohioan groups (they call Columbus home) that make their state seem a little more tolerable. They play pretty straight Kinks-meet-Nuggets rock with elements of punk-y noise under the direction of 10-year frontman Will Foster. He's had the rest of the lineup for the last four years. (Gary Brownstein on guitar, Danny Moreland on bass and Chuck Della Lana on drums — ever notice how band personnel lists are almost always in that order: frontman, guitar, bass, drums. It's institutional musical classism!) "The flakiest Fall fan in the world said we were loud and stompy, we believe him," Foster says of the band's sound. (Note the humor.) They just finished some recording, and will soon put out a single on Columbus Discount Records and a full-length later this year. But their big dream as a band? "To write a classic Christmas song we can live on for the rest of our lives." Ah, idealism. | RDW Note the humor: realdetroitweekly.com. |
