gowns began as a very scrappy 2piece in early 2005 in los angeles. it was ezra buchla, who was singing in the mae shi at the time, and erika anderson, who was playing guitar and oscillators in amps for christ. gowns played a lot around LA, about half the time in places like the newly famous SMELL and half the time in dorkbot galleries like machine project and concrete noiseholes like the defunct Il Corral. they played sitting down on a blue furry rug with a viola, a computer, and contact mics taped to the back of guitar amps, making a music that was, in ezra's words, "too structured for 'noise', too wimpy for 'rock', too ugly and self-sabotaged for 'folk', too simple and straightforward for 'free' music." their debut album, Red State, is a record about growing up in the nothing wasteland of flyover zones. pitchfork media described it as a "porno about confusion". the village voice described their live show as "holy fucking fuck". gowns have toured extensively across the US and europe. they continue to make an explosive and beautiful music that fits somewhere between rock, noise, folk and gospel. lookit that came out of nowhere. |
