Paul Metzger
Iconoclastic guitarist and banjoist Paul Metzger is best known for his involvement in the St Paul, Minnesota- based power trio TVBC, who have been singularly blending the power of a high-volume rock trio with the improvisational freedom of jazz and the transcendent fluidity of raga since the mid 1980s. Since that time, he has also been developing his own singular improvisational approach to banjo and acoustic guitar. Working in virtual isolation for the last 10 to 15 years (and blissfully unaware of any trends in the latest permutations of the psych/folk underground), he has adapted and mutated these instruments well beyond their original design by adding sympathetic strings, removing frets, adding extra holes and extra bridges with independent/complementary string setups and refining a highly unique variety of playing techniques that all coalesce to bring forth a style of music belonging to him alone. The instruments are now nearly unrecognizable, but when one hears the sounds that come out, they are undeniably Metzger. Paul Metzger has released five solo albums including "Deliverance" just released on Locust. |
